Basic Chocolate Frosting

Basic Chocolate Frosting


  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 12 oz semi-sweet chocolate, melted and cooled
  • 2 sticks (1 cup) butter, room temperature
  • ~2 cups icing sugar


  • Mix the cocoa powder and water together until smooth, and set aside to cool slightly.
  • Add the cocoa powder mixture, melted chocolate, and butter to the bowl of an electric mixer, and beat on medium speed until light and fluffy. Add the icing sugar, 1/2 cup at a time, until desired consistency is achieved.
